Anonymous and Lulz Security have issued a statement for followers to boycott PayPal over issues with Wikileaks
- High Profile hacker groups have asked their followers to boycott PayPal.
- Anonymous and Lulz Security have asked supporters to withdraw funds and close accounts.
- This is over PayPal freezing Wikileaks assets after it released stolen US diplomatic cables.
- Because of on-going legal action over attempted hacks to the site PayPal have not commented on the statement.
- Lulz Sec and Anonymous wrote in an online post “ PayPal continues to withhold funds from WikiLeaks, a beacon of truth in these dark times. By simply standing up for ourselves and uniting the people, PayPal still sees it fit to wash its hands of any blame, and instead encourages and assists law enforcement to hunt down participants in the AntiSec movement the campaign to highlight weak IT security."
- LulzSec and Anonymous are both notorious for stealing private information from websites with poor security.
- The two hacker groups then post the information they have stolen.
- Over 100 million people use PayPal around the world to make online payments
- In December 2010 PayPal stopped handling donations to Wikileaks.
- PayPal was accused of bowing to pressure from the US Government on the decision.
- Several denial of service attacks on PayPal were made shortly after the decision.
- In July 2011 14 people from both the Us and Europe were arrested in connection with the attacks.
- PayPal will not discuss the boycott but have said “As we state in our privacy policy, PayPal works with law enforcement or government officials if we receive a subpoena or court order; if we need to do so to comply with law; or if we believe in good faith that illegal activity has occurred."
